D & L Events Pty Ltd v Opetaia [2024] QSC 245

In D & L Events Pty Ltd v Opetaia [2024] QSC 245, the Supreme Court of Queensland considered a contractual dispute between a boxing promotion company, D & L Events, and a professional boxer, Jai Opetaia. The dispute centred on allegations of contract repudiation. After the expiry of a broadcasting contract with Fox Sports, D & L Events was allegedly unable to fulfil its obligations under the promotion contract due to a lack of television deals, which prompted Opetaia to terminate the agreement. The court examined whether this termination was lawful. Ultimately, it was held that D & L Events repudiated the contract by insisting on promoting overseas matches without Opetaia's consent, contrary to the contract terms requiring his agreement. Opetaia’s termination was deemed lawful, leading to the dismissal of D & L Events' claims.
