In R v Buggy [2024] QCA 80, the appellant, Israel Colin Buggy, unsuccessfully appealed against a seven-year imprisonment sentence, alongside a serious violent offence declaration, for a malicious act intending to cause grievous bodily harm. The court deliberated over Buggy's claim that the severity of his sentence, combined with the serious violent offence declaration, was excessive. Upon review, the court concluded that the original sentencing, given the context of Buggy’s actions—including the grave nature of the attack, Buggy's prior criminal history, and the impact on the victim—was appropriate and dismissed the appeal.
