R v Ferreira [2024] QCA 186

In R v Ferreira [2024] QCA 186, reviewed by Bond JA in the Court of Appeal, the applicant, Carlos Adelino Henrique Ferreira, was previously convicted on 19 December 2023 of two counts of fraud and one of money laundering, resulting in sentences of six years, 18 months, and two years (to be served concurrently), respectively. His parole eligibility was set for 19 September 2025. Ferreira attempted to appeal the sentence, citing excessiveness and errors in judicial principles, among other grounds, but failed to file his application within the prescribed time. He submitted a delayed extension application, arguing limited resources and delays as a self-represented, incarcerated individual. Despite an opportunity for adjournment and a timeline set by Mullins P to prepare submissions, Ferreira failed to comply. His repeated attempts for adjournments, inadequately supported, led to Bond JA finding no sufficient explanation for delays, resulting in his request for an extension being struck out for want of prosecution. The application for leave to appeal against the sentence was also struck out.
