In the case of R v Liu [2024] QCA 58, the Supreme Court of Queensland deliberated an appeal against sentencing brought by Yu Liu. At the core of the appeal was the contention that the cumulative sentences of six years imprisonment for each of two major offences, leading to parole eligibility after nine and one-half years, were manifestly excessive. The appeal questioned whether Liu's sentencing properly accounted for the totality principle, particularly given his youth, relatively minor prior convictions, and the premeditated nature of his violent offence alongside his significant role in drug trafficking activities. Despite these considerations, the court ultimately dismissed the appeal, underscoring the severity of Liu's criminal actions, which included the trafficking of dangerous drugs into the prison system and involvement in a violent act with severe repercussions for an innocent victim.
