R v SEJ [2024] QCA 162

In R v SEJ [2024] QCA 162, the Queensland Court of Appeal addressed SEJ's appeal against a conviction for rape, a domestic violence offence. The jury found SEJ guilty on 19 April 2023, and he was sentenced to six years of imprisonment. The primary issue on appeal was whether the verdict was unreasonable or unsupported by evidence, specifically regarding the complainant's consent. While it was admitted that penetration occurred, SEJ contended that the complainant had financial motivations for making the complaint. However, the Court upheld the original conviction, emphasizing that the jury's conclusion was reasonable based on the complainant's credible and consistent testimony, which was corroborated by her actions following the incident and by witness statements. Ultimately, the appeal was dismissed.
