In the case of Ravenswood Gold Pty Ltd v Easton & Ors [2024] QLC 18, the Queensland Land Court evaluated the application by Ravenswood Gold Pty Ltd for a mining lease. Ravenswood seeks to expand its mining operations, which has been ongoing for 37 years, through the addition of new infrastructure and roadways. Objections were raised about potential impacts on property access, loss of amenity, and environmental and human rights concerns. However, the objectors remained non-active in proceedings and provided little detailed evidence. The court, presided by PG Stilgoe OAM, considered statutory criteria, including compliance with the Mineral Resources Act 1989 and the consideration of human rights under the Human Rights Act 2019. Ultimately, the court was satisfied that Ravenswood complied with relevant legal provisions and demonstrated necessary capabilities, while environmental and human impacts were assessed to be minimal and manageable. The court recommended approval of the mining lease, citing the significant economic and community benefits alongside adherence to legal and environmental standards.
