In Re MZU [2024] QSC 154, the Supreme Court of Queensland denied MZU's application for bail related to 72 charges, including serious assault, burglary, and multiple counts of breaching bail. The court found that MZU, who has a mental impairment and had been in custody for nearly two years, did not understand the nature of a bail undertaking. Even though the applicant met criteria indicating a mental impairment, the court concluded that there was an unacceptable risk he would commit further offences if released.
