In The Registrar of the Supreme Court of Queensland v Wood (No 4) [2024] QSC 135, Ian Andrew Wood (the respondent) was found guilty of contempt of court on two separate occasions due to his disruptive and disrespectful behaviour during court proceedings. The respondent repeatedly made serious and unfounded allegations of incompetence, corruption, and criminal conduct against the judge and the court, and even issued threats of legal action. Despite being offered the chance to withdraw his comments, Wood continued his behaviour. Consequently, the court sentenced him to a total of six months in prison—four months for the contempts of court on 26 July 2023 and two months for the contempt on 2 August 2023. The sentences were to be served concurrently, with the four-month sentence suspended for an operational period of two years on the condition that Wood demonstrates good behaviour. Wood was also ordered to pay the applicant’s costs of the application on a standard basis.
