Zou v Yang; Wei v Yang; Yang v Zheng [2024] QDC 39

In Zou v Yang; Wei v Yang; Yang v Zheng [2024] QDC 39, the Brisbane District Court delivered a complex judgment involving three interconnected proceedings concerning debt claims and misrepresentation. Judge Porter KC DCJ ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, Jiangmin Zou and Guirong Wei, against Jun Yang, awarding substantial sums in both cases ($1,498,039.86 and $1,646,897.87 respectively, inclusive of interest) with the defendant also ordered to cover the plaintiffs' legal costs. Conversely, a separate proceeding initiated by Jun Yang against Youlin Zheng was dismissed, with Yang ordered to pay Zheng's legal costs. The rulings underline the court's discretion in cost orders and emphasize the significance of settlement offers, as Yang's success on a specific security issue in one appeal did not materially affect the overarching cost orders.
